Hello Milky Way Craftians,
NOTE: This will be my last message on this website, from yours truly, kungfujamesbond.
Today is a sad day as I would like to formally announce the closure of Milky Way Craft on October 6, 2016. Since no one has donated this month or the last few months, I feel there is no real point to keeping the server up. I'm barely on the server anymore since I am very busy with my life and my job. I feel it's the best time to say goodbye now. It's been a good 4 years designing and working on the server, but now, it will come to an end.
I would like to thank everyone that helped make Milky Way Craft memorable over the years and to this day. I think about the cherished moments daily even when I'm not on the server. The shenanigans and the epic deaths that I caused were all jokes at the end of the day. Many of you have hated it or probably enjoyed it secretly. But it was all for fun. One things for sure, I'm not sorry for hurting your feelings =P. Thank you all for making Milky Way Craft the way it is.
Since you guys/gals barely know why I started this server anyways, I know a very few of you do but some don't, the next few paragraphs will date back to when I first started building a server, before Milky Way Craft. I wanted to give you all a story of the origins. It is a pre-History and Birth of Milky Way Craft.
Well, what can I tell you. I always pictured making a Multiworld Minecraft server around the time I was designing and finishing up my second server aka Project X. The first server I made was originally designed with a Minecraft player named Crawfords. We used to work together at school and had this idea to make a server after we saw the potential Minecraft had back in early January 2011. We had a Creative server with generated Minecraft land. We had lots of designs made by random players. Pixel Art started treading so we built an area specially for that. I helped design a portaled Temple of Time from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to help teleport players to their destination and to get to where they wanted to build. Over time, we felt there were too many Creative servers that existed in Minecraft at the time. People who loved Creative would build non-stop everywhere and it wasn't control properly as no plugin existed yet. So we spent the next few months working on a new concept server called Project X. This concept helped bring Minecraft back to it's roots. We felt players weren't experiencing Minecraft with other players looking for loot and getting scared by creepers. That intense feeling you get when you're in a cave. We wanted to bring that feeling back instead of having a Creative server.
Around this time in April 2011, I finished school and wasn't looking for a job. I had more time to help work out the kinks on the new server, plugins, and final designs of the server. Crawfords helped bring the designs to life with his creativity and determination and I would cater to his designs with plugins and give out new ideas so the server would feel fresh and fun.
The server finally opened June 8, 2011 and was named SRC Minecraft. This server was a Survival RPG server. It was a simple and fun server design. When you joined the server, you will be told to read some signs (which barely anyone did lol) and then you will be given one Plot only. 30 by 30. It was non-protected. And you would get 1 double chest on your plot. That's it. Sure the size of the plot was small but we felt giving a bigger plot would ruin the survival experience. We wanted people to feel reserved and comfortable. It would make sense if we had a Creative server and gave a bigger plot, but this was a survival server. We felt the bigger space would better benefit donators. A few donated and they were happy with their purchase. There was no plot plugin back then so every plot was made by WorldEdit and all plots were in one world only. Each plot had their own number like an address. There were 3 cities in SRC Minecraft (Tetra, Octa, and soon to be open Beta). Griefing was a day-to-day problem but we didn't mind it as we hired staff to help watch the server daily and to check up on it. There was anti-griefing plugin used back then incase we need to catch the culprit. I personally wrote a 10+ page Player's Guide to help new players know what to do on the server and how to play. I also had a restaurant where people could stop by to eat or drink. Crawfords has his ancient and mysterous Sphinx and secret portal Pyramid (that no one could get in without WorldEdit) to help him get around the server.
Anywho, the way the server worked was you had your 30 by 30 plot. There were many different activites you could do on the server daily and everyday wouldn't be boring. You had the choice to go to the Mine Fields for a price, you would collect resources such as Wood, Diamond, Iron, Gold, etc, whatever you could find, and then bring it back to your plot to build your house or whatever you wanted on your 30x30 plot. We called the currency Stax. You could even sell your resources at the Item Shop. The Item Shop let you sell items or buy items that you wanted. You could sell it to Guido or sell it on the signs. You could also trade with players and pay each other. If you wanted to save your goodies to sell for later, you had access to the Bank to store all your goodies. There was only 1 chest in the Bank and only you could open it personally. The only way to check your Balance was to check it at the Bank. Fun Land was where you could play MobArena, Tetris, etc, with your friends. Everyone who played on the server had a really good time. It was very memorable. During that time on SRC Minecraft, I had an idea to bring in more players into the server by offering different gameplays. By keeping our Survival RPG server and having a portal to a Creative world, it would help boost the server population. But there wasn't a plugin out there at the time that would make my dream come true. There was no Multiworld or Inventory plugin to separate the worlds. So I scrapped the idea and we continued running the server.
At the end of August/September 2011, I was forced by my family to look for a job as they felt I was wasting my time doing nothing with my Game Design degree. Crawfords had quit and shutdown the server before year's end after I told him I decided to focus on getting a job. I eventually got hired around December 2011. During that time, I was in and out of Minecraft but barely playing. I did try to give Crawfords a different server idea but it failed without my assistance. I tried to help but it failed miserably. They were a few that played on it but not as many as the previous server we worked on together.
Months went by and I felt I had missed that experience of building a server. So I started designing a server early July 2012. I started off making a Creative server again to get back into the game because I felt that was the fastest way to get back into Minecraft and not having to worry about Survival worlds. Plot plugins existed at this time and it was great. I got in contact with Crawfords to help run the server, but after two weeks, he felt the server wasn't making any money and decided to take the server back and not host me anymore as he was looking for a new job. I didn't mind it at all. I knew where he was coming from. That's when I decided to finally find a server host through Minecraft Forums and pay for it myself.
I began experimenting with what kind of server I wanted to build. I wanted to build a RPG server again but I felt no one would enjoy that so I designed a Theme park world instead. But at the same time, I wanted to build a Creative server and a Game server! How could I possibly make this all fit together?!?! After a few days, I finally figured it out after looking through more plugins. A Multiworld and Inventory plugin finally existed that I had found late August/Early September 2012. My dream slowly began to be true! I decided to merge all the servers into one and have each world with their own separate inventory. Each world different from each other offering different gameplay. It was great! Thus, Milky Way Craft was born on September 10, 2012 and the rest is history.
So if you guys are wondering, the website will be running till the end of the year. Feel free to leave messages until then. After that, it will be gone forever. I won't be accepting any donations until now and till the end of the year. Hopefully you guys will find a new cool server to play in instead of this boring one :D
Anyways, it's been a long journey for me and a tiring one having to build and maintain the server on my own. I am officially done with Minecraft (for now). It's time to hang up my jacket.
I would like thank you all again. Thank you for choosing and playing on Milky Way Craft! You could have picked any server in the world but you came to play here instead. No matter how you got to Milky Way Craft, thank you! It's been an honor to have served and met you all in Minecraft. I hope this server has been fun and enjoyable for you to play on. It's been fun working on it and I know many of you enjoyed playing on it! :D I have no regrets at all.
As a final note, I hope that everything you do in life is meaningful. Do well in life and reach for your goals! I will miss you all deeply! :D Take care and stay safe~
P.S. I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING! lol jk ;D
